ICAN of Austin

Several women met today with the intention of forming an Austin chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN). With the C/section rate rising every year here in Austin and around the country, and the nearly impossible challenge of finding a doctor who will help a woman have a VBAC, it is high time we have this kind of support group in Austin. Fortunately there are many people who are interested in helping this new ICAN group become a thriving entity. Please stay tuned for the date and time of the next meeting. We are planning to have monthly meetings with many topics including specific questions to ask care providers, what partners can do to be extra supportive to VBAC mamas, and true informed choice. For more information about ICAN, please see ICAN-Online.

Celebrating World Breastfeeding Day

On August 7th, many groups involved in Maternal/Child Health Care gathered at Austin City Hall to celebrate and show support for World Breastfeeding Day. The lobby of city hall was full of women, children, and families hoping to draw attention to the importance of breastfeeding to mothers, babies, and the environment.
Here midwives Natalie Lake, Illysa Foster, and Christy Tashjian pose for a picture. Midwife Laurie Fremgen also attended the fun event.
